Following President Barack Obama’s order on March 9, 2009, lifting a ban on embryonic stem cell research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) drafted guidelines for the publicly funded stem cell research in the US. According to the draft national funding would be available for research involving human embryonic stem cells which were got from embryos through in vitro fertilization (IVF) obtained for reproductive purposes, but were not needed for the purpose any more. Though the move drew sharp criticism from religious groups which considered destruction of human embryos as killing, President Barack defended the move as a promise for finding treatment for diseases such as Parkinson’s diabetes and Alzheimer’s.
